The basic pattern of the Asuke Townscape (Important Preservation District of Historic Buildings) was formed during the Sengoku era, while the modern layout of the town developed in the early Edo period.
The current townscape is lined with machiya townhouses built after the great fire of 1775 in the nurigome-zukuri style, which are coated in plaster to the eaves in order to prevent fires, and conveys the look of the town in those days to modern generations. The rows of homes extend 2 km, with a varied mix of tsumairi (with the entrance on the gabled sides) and hirairi (with the entrance parallel to the roof ridge) styles, and it was designated Aichi Prefecture’s first National Important Preservation District of Historic Buildings (commonly abbreviated “judenken” in Japanese) in June 2011.
